Information for New Members

1. Golf

Full members are entitled to play golf at all times and five day members are entitled to play golf from Monday to Friday (including bank holidays) at all times. The exceptions are when the tees are reserved for matches, visiting societies and special events. These are displayed weekly on the events notice board by the Professional’s shop and on the website www.ebgc.co.uk. Kindly note that the tee is generally reserved for ladies competitions from 08.45 to 10.45 hours every Tuesday morning.

Starting time sheets are in operation every Sunday morning and some Saturdays. These are displayed on the notice board a few weeks in advance. For most Club competitions, there is a draw for start times and partners.

A Wednesday competition is run between 1 April and 30 September and qualifies for handicap purposes. You can enter this competition by reporting to the Professional’s shop at any time; please refer to the events notice board.

When entering a competition, you must sign the competition book and pay the entry fee in the Professional’s shop before play. On completion of play your scorecard, signed by your marker and yourself, must be recorded on the PSI machine in the main hallway  or in the proshop and the card placed in the box. Please ensure both names are legible on the card.

Results of all competitions are posted on the notice board in the changing room and are filed for reference purposes.

2. Course Etiquette

Please note the following arrangements regarding play on the course:

The 2nd hole is a call-on hole and you should allow the match behind you to drive off before putting out.

When approaching the 9th green, you should wait to allow the match on the 10th tee to drive off.

At the halfway house, if you do not wish to stop please request to go through from those who have stopped for refreshement. Remember the halfway house is a franchise operation and is a fantastic facility. We would encourage all golfers to support Dale and Bev as much as possible.

The usual courtesies should be observed; repairing pitch marks, smoothing bunkers, replacing divots and maintaining a reasonable pace of play.

Less experienced golfers may also find the following notes helpful:

  • Please let faster players through. This should always happen if the match behind is waiting and you have lost more than one clear hole on the match in front.
  • If you are having trouble finding your ball, you should call the next match through immediately if they are waiting.
  • Never hesitate to shout “FORE” if your ball is hit towards another player. A shout is appreciated more than a bruise!
  • Please do not pull trolleys over greens, tees or through bunkers. Please observe the white tapes and route instructions when pulling a trolley.
3. Handicapping

All competition entry forms will state whether it is a qualifying competition or not. East Brighton Golf Club operates the Congu Unified Handicapping System with additional provisions for reducing handicaps for consistent low scoring in accordance with Rule 19. A register of all members’ handicaps is available in the men’s changing room.

4. Inter-Club Matches

There are two categories, one for 18 and over handicaps (called the Angoras) and one for below 18. These matches are played against a number of local Sussex Clubs and take place on Saturday afternoons.

5. Seniors Section

For members aged 55 and over, there is a thriving seniors section with a full programme of inter-club matches and competitions.

6. Mixed Golf

Details of mixed competitions and inter-club matches are displayed on a notice board in the main hallway. Partners can always be found for members looking for a game.

7. Bar

A well stocked bar offering real ales is at your disposal. Opening hours are displayed in the Clubhouse. A 12% discount is given on drinks purchases made using the Membership Swipe Card.

8. Dress

Whilst we believe in maintaining the best traditions of golf, we also wish to extend a friendly and relaxed welcome to members and guests. In the interests of both, we trust you will find the existing Club rules on dress appropriate. Smart casual dress is acceptable in most parts of the Clubhouse and jacket and tie (or equivalent for ladies) may be required for more formal occasions such as Club matches and prize-giving. The Club’s dress code may be relaxed at the discretion of the Club Captain, the Team Captain of the Day or by arrangement with the General Manager.

In the 19th bar, members are required to be dressed in smart casual clothing or clean golf attire. Tailored shorts may be worn with golf sports socks. Hats are not permitted.

Golf shoes (either soft or metal spikes) are necessary on the course and putting green. Smart golfing attire is required, tailored shorts with sports socks are allowed and headwear must be worn correctly.

Mobile phones must be turned off on the course. The exception to this is on the 9th tee when ordes may be called through to the halfway house.

In the Clubhouse calls must be made and taken outside or in the locker rooms.

Children (12 years and under) do not have to follow the dress code but must be neatly attired.

9. Security

The membership swipe card is used to enter the Clubhouse.

10. Catering

There is a printed menu in the bar plus a ‘specials’ board. Catering hours vary depending on the time of year.

11. Social Events

Various functions are held in the Clubhouse throughout the year. These are advertised well in advance on the notice board in the hallway and on the website. Members may hire the restaurant and/or the Oak Room for private functions.

12. Club Office

The Club Office is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday.

To keep members informed of news and events, the General Manager sends regular emails , and up to date news items can also be seen on the Club website www.ebgc.co.uk.

New members are invited to register on our Club website www.ebgc.co.uk where they can see latest news items, and are able to access the on-line booking facility. Members may book up to 2 weeks in advance. Once registered this is a very useful tool.
