| Captain’s Drive in, East Brighton Golf Club 2011.
Captain for 2011 Paul Crompton It was a cold January morning that faced the players of the shotgun start, but that did not deter the hardy golfers of East Brighton, in this re-scheduled Captain’s Drive in. They turned out in force to support their new captain Paul Crompton after the disappointment of having to cancel the original date due to the December snowfall. 28 teams of four started out at 9.00am battling with the cold northerly wind; in the end it was a close result with four teams fighting for third place on count back with 87 points, second place with 89 points but the winners with 91 points were Ian Richmond, Steve Frogley, John Warren and Kieran Madden. The Captains for 2010 putted out, to make way for the new. First up on the tee was Billy Baker, Junior Captain who set a high standard with a monster drive straight up the middle, next was John Noble as the Seniors’ Captain closely followed by the Ladies’ Captain Vicky Johnson both of whom partook in the customary shot of brandy before taking their drives. Now was the turn for the incoming Captain, Paul Crompton, with a deep breath and shot of brandy he took club in hand and walked up to the tee, jesting with his hands for the gathered crowds to stand clear, then as he addressed the ball he began his pre-shot warm up, much to the spectators delight as they counted each ‘WAGGLE’ out loud, “one, two, three” then cheers as the ball was hit clear up the fairway and out of sight. After a brief break the outgoing Captain Gary Halewood thanked all for making his year a very special one, and he wished Paul a fantastic year too. Then with the assistance of the Vice Captain Jim Daniels, they presented Captain Paul Crompton (Captain Crompo) with the jacket and badge of his new office. Paul said “it would be an honour to represent the club as Captain” a club for which he has been a member for some 30 years. |
